Freestanding Villa
Almere, Netherlands
Within an urban plan by OMA in Almere, lots are being sold including an architect’s design. In this way, the municipality wants to realize its ambition for high-quality architecture. Characteristic of the urban plan is the Asian-looking subdivision of densely packed houses. With a minimal budget, the challenge of the design lies in an efficient layout of the floor plan and in a simple but interesting facade. Despite its small volume, the villa includes a large living room with live-in kitchen and two spacious bedrooms. The facade consists of an anthracite aluminium ribbed gable plate, with white window frames behind it as an accent. The facade makes playful use of daylight and the shapes are a nod to Asian architecture. The building(s) stands out for its appearance and fits well with the idea of the free subdivision, each with its own identity.
