AIR WAR EXPERIUM
Air War WWII Museum
Netherlands
The air war over Western Europe during World War II is a battle that had enormous impact. The story of the longest battle of the war, from Sept. 1, 1939 to May 5, 1945, is one that has remained largely unexposed. A few museums pay attention to it in parts; nowhere in Europe is it on full display.
A team of initiators (including qb studio) set up a foundation and developed a concept to tell this story in a special way through experience. A combination of film, theatre and exhibition brings to life the experiences of Allied pilots, German Luftwaffe personnel and that of civilians on the ground. This mix of media, comes to its full advantage in a bunker that played a central role and can symbolize the control that people tried to exert on the chaotic nature of this warfare.
The design of the extension was inspired by a design language appropriate to the bunker and air warfare: camouflage netting and revetments (aircraft stands). The flowing lines of camouflage netting hanging from the bunker carry translucent solar panels, cast shadow lines across the interior and extend to earthen ramparts on the outside. In this way, space was created for large objects such as an airplane and a German Würzburg Riese radar installation. The bunker is furnished with minimal interventions to maximize the ‘experience’.
Sustainability is paramount in this project.
Due to competing interests, the details of the foundation and the bunker are not listed.
